What is “Infertility”?

  1. World Health Organization: Infertility is “a disease of the reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.”
  2. American Society for Reproductive Medicine: “Infertility is the result of a disease (an interruption, cessation, or disorder of body functions, systems, or organs) of the male or female reproductive tract which prevents the conception of a child or the ability to carry a pregnancy to delivery. The duration of unprotected intercourse with failure to conceive should be about 12 months before an infertility evaluation is undertaken, unless medical history, age, or physical findings dictate earlier evaluation and treatment.”

What is the most important
factor affecting a woman's fertility?

Women's fertility starts to decrease after 35. Fertility declines significantly by 40.Both the number and the quality of eggs get lower and lower .

When should couples
have a fertility consultation?

  • Younger than 35 years old: Failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.

  • Older than 35 years old: Failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 6 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.

  • High risk: People should get early consultation if they have a reproductive  disease. e.g. endometriosis, pelvic inflammation, congenital diseases, sexual dysfunction etc.
