What is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)?

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is currently the most efficient clinical treatment for infertility. IVF involves using laboratory techniques to fertilize eggs and sperm outside the body, cultivate the embryos, and then transfer them into the uterus for further development, assisting in the process of pregnancy. With advancements in technology, it is now possible to conduct pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT-A) along with “time-lapse” incubators for precise medical care, which helps increase the chances of pregnancy.

Taipei Fertility Center (TFC) has accompanied 30,000 couples on their IVF journey, providing personalized treatment plans and precise ovulation induction. TFC has achieved a pregnancy rate to 60% in IVF treatments, with a pregnancy rate of nearly 70% for women under 38 years old. Taiwan's first IVF baby was also born through Professor Chii-Ruey Tzeng, the bellwether of TFC's medical team.

Factors that affect the success of in vitro fertilization (IVF)?

1. Age at the start of IVF treatment

"Timing" is key to IVF success, including the age when treatment begins, whether embryo transfer is synchronized with the endometrial cycle, and the timing of the transfer window. All of these factors significantly impact IVF success rates.

2. Sperm, Egg, and Embryo Quality

Higher sperm motility and better egg quality lead to a higher fertilization rate. Combining this with Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT-A) and time-lapse incubators allows for precise assessment of embryo health, better management of development issues, and early detection of chromosomal abnormalities.

3. Uterine Environment

The ideal uterine lining thickness is typically between 8-10 mm. If the lining is too thin or too thick, or if abnormalities such as polyps, adhesions, inflammation, or uterine fibroids are present, they may create an unfavorable environment for embryo implantation.

How to Improve IVF Success Rates?

1. Pre-pregnancy Health Screening

Planning for pregnancy? A fertility checkup can help you prepare early and boost your chances of success. Don’t wait until it’s too late!

Pre-pregnancy health screenings ensure both physical and mental readiness for conception. Men can undergo a semen analysis to assess sperm count, motility, and morphology, while women should consider an AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) test to evaluate ovarian reserve—an essential fertility indicator. Early testing provides crucial insights, allowing timely interventions to optimize fertility and improve IVF success rates.

Pre-pregnancy Health Screening

Delaying pregnancy can significantly impact fertility. As women age, egg quality declines, and the stress of trying to conceive can lead to hormonal imbalances, reducing the chances of successful pregnancy. Even when older eggs are fertilized, chromosomal abnormalities may arise, causing embryos that appear healthy but fail to result in pregnancy. Additionally, advanced maternal age increases the risk of complications such as premature birth and other pregnancy-related issues.

2. If you're unsure about having children in the future, consider egg freezing.

The best age for egg freezing is between 30 and 35 years old. After this age, the number of eggs retrieved decreases, and their quality declines. By 40, multiple egg retrieval cycles may be needed to collect enough eggs for future use. Even if you’re not ready for children now, egg freezing serves as insurance, preserving your fertility for future possibilities.

3.Maintain a healthy routine and balanced diet

Ensure adequate protein, Omega-3, vitamins, and minerals to support hormonal balance and reproductive health.

  • Limit fats and sugars to protect the quality of sperm and eggs.

  • Choose whole, unprocessed foods, as processed items may contain harmful additives and plasticizers that affect fertility.

  • Cut back on caffeine and alcohol, as excessive consumption can disrupt blood circulation and physiological functions.

Consult a dietitian or traditional Chinese medicine doctor to create a  personalized fertility diet plan. Additionally, find effective stress-relief techniques to reduce the impact of stress on your reproductive health.

4.Live smart and avoid environmental hormones

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can negatively impact male fertility by reducing sperm count and quality, increasing the risk of infertility. In women, exposure to these substances can lead to early sexual development, raise the risk of breast cancer, and elevate the chances of developing conditions like endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

  • Minimize your exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemical

Harmful chemicals like dioxins, plasticizers, and PCBs, can interfere with hormone function. Everyday products like pesticides, heavy metals, plasticizers, and detergents contribute to this exposure. To reduce the risk of environmental hormone disruption, follow these steps: avoid storing hot food in plastic containers, refrain from using Chinese medicines of unknown origin (which may contain heavy metals), and choose fragrance-free cosmetics and skincare products.

5.Integrating Traditional Chinese Medicine

Taipei Fertility Center (TFC) combines Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western medicine to provide a comprehensive and personalized fertility solution. With therapies like acupuncture and cupping, we focus on improving overall health, optimizing sperm and egg quality, and enhancing the uterine environment.
